Climate Justice

The South is on the frontline of the climate crisis. In recent years, we have faced an unprecedented number of natural disasters, and we can expect this trend to continue with hotter days, sea levels rising, and more frequent and severe storms.

To make a lasting impact on climate change, we must focus on a just transition to renewable energy that also creates good, union jobs for all Alabamians. Hometown has historically worked on issues at the intersection of climate and workers’ rights. We supported striking coal miners during the longest strike in Alabama history through a series of solidarity actions and raising over $18,000 for the strike fund; we helped win a Community Benefits Agreement with New Flyer–North America’s largest bus manufacturer and leader in electric buses–covering their facilities in Anniston, AL and Ontario, CA as part of the Alabama Coalition for Community Benefits.

Turning our attention to the current impacts of climate disasters, we are currently engaged in a Climate Protection Project in collaboration with our sister organization, Hometown Organizing Project, and Political Healers Project.
